Paddleboarding for beginners: how to do it

Have you never stood on a SUP board before? No problem at all. Paddleboarding is quick to learn and much easier than it looks. On this page, we explain exactly what you can expect, from that first step onto the board to your first solo trip through the Leiden canals.

Step by step

Step 1

Pick up your SUP board at Aalmarkt 4. We’ll give you a brief instruction: how to stand, how to paddle, and what to do if you fall.

Step 2

Start on your knees. Once you feel stable, slowly stand up. No stress, there’s plenty of time!

Step 3

Start paddling! Enjoy. You have 2 or 4 hours to have a great time.

  • From 16 years old. Younger is allowed, but only with a supervisor. Participants must have a swimming certificate.

Safety

  • Every board is equipped with a leash that you wear around your ankle. This ensures the board always stays with you.
